Starting Fresh

I've never been one to actually follow through with New Year's Resolutions. My husband really hates the idea of creating a list of things to tell yourself and others you will do and never fulfill. Well, I'm here to - number one - change some things in my life and - number two - prove him wrong.

To begin, here are a few of the things I plan to accomplish throughout the next 365 days.

1. I plan to keep a blog. (I've always loved reading other people's blogs and actually created this blog last January. Did I ever write on it? No. I will be honest here and admit that I'm a very private person and have a difficult time sharing things about myself so openly. This will be a rewarding experience and challenge as I plan to notate the things in my life for me to reflect back on in years to come.)

2. I plan to limit my sweets. (I discussed this some with family over the holidays and at first decided to completely eliminate sweets; however, I have thought more on it and decided a more realistic goal would be to allow myself one dessert a month. Am I crazy? We shall see. Nevertheless, I think it will be good for me to develop more self control when it comes to consuming unnecessary sugary luxuries.)

3. I plan to exercise regularly. (This means I will walk, run, lift weights, hike, bike... yada, yada, yada... a minimum of four days a week. This shouldn't be hard. I love exercising and have the means at home.... I just need to do it.)

4. I plan to lose weight. (Yes, this is the most overused New Year's Resolution ever.... but I mean it. I believe that if I apply number 2 and 3 on my list to my life, I should be able to fulfill number 4. Right?)

5. I plan to study the Bible. (I grew up reading the Bible and need to work on taking the things I've read and study/apply them to my life. How should I go about doing this? As of right now, I plan to set aside thirty minutes at least five days a week to really study the things I read from the Bible. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share what you have studied lately or recommend.)

6. I plan to maintain my household duties in a timely fashion. (You may be wondering... what does that mean... Well, it means that I plan to keep up with my cleaning responsibilities by scheduling specific days I do specific chores. I tend to let all the cleaning build up at once and that just is not good for anyone to have to clean up at once. I'm sick of having to clean every room - dust, fold clothes, wash mirrors, sweep, etc - at once when I have people up to visit. It gets really old spending three to four hours doing back bending cleaning when I should spread the cleaning out over a continuous seven day routine.)

Should I go on? Naw, I think six detailed goals are plenty to keep me busy for the next year.

Thanks for reading! I'm excited to begin my blogging adventure and can't wait to see what all God has in store for my family and I as I share our memorable moments here for all to read.

Much love,
Emily Wesley

  1. I love the list. Also,I think your picture at the top with Winston is great. You are a lovely person. Mom and I are proud of you. The resolutions feed on each other: less sweets, exercise 4 days a week, and loose weight. The bible reading will help you stay grounded and bring you peace of heart. The blog can help to keep you true to the other resolutions if your friends will keep after you a little. Good luck on keeping the house clean. Let me challenge you to get rid of stuff you rarely/never use. It is something I have been doing since we moved to this house and it has been good for me. Love you Em.

  2. I am excited about reading your blog :) I am right there with you on the "timely cleaning" resolution. Today, we had several people over and it took all day to make just the kitchen, bathroom, and living room look presentable. Unfortunately, everyone still had to go through the bedrooms to get the bathrooms! haha

  3. You probably figured out that I read an older blog first. Funny how I start some things at the end. Oh well. I'm impressed that you started the new year with public resolutions! I agree with Dad -- he has such a way with words that I admire -- and know you'll be a better person Dec. 31 if you stay on track with your goals on Jan. 1. I look forward to seeing the effect of your goals and cheer you on each day!
