Scriptures to Memorize

As I was browsing the web for scriptures to memorize, I came upon this site that recommended memorizing the 26 scriptures below. They suggest working on one scripture a week for six months. Here they are:
1.  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 KJV

2.  Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
 Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV

3.  So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
John 13:34-35 NLT

4. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
John 18:20 KJV

5.  But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Romans 5:8 NLT

6.  Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Psalm 37:4 KJV

7.  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
Jer 29:11 NIV

8.  “I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1-2 NIV

9.  “The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Psalm 19:1 NIV

10. “Reckless words pierce like a sword,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Proverbs 12:18 NIV

11. “A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but harsh words stir up anger.”
Proverbs 15:1 NLT

12. “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV

13.  “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 NIV

14.  The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Ps 23:1-4 KJV

15. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Ps 23:5-6 KVJ

16.  He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Ps 91:1-2 NIV

17.  Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
     and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
     and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Ps 91:3-4 NIV

18.  You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
Ps 91:5-6 NIV

19.  A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

       and show him my salvation.”
Ps 91:15-16 NIV

24.  For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Eph 2:10 NIV

25.  For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
Romans 10:9-10

26.  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

I'll be honest and say these aren't my "favorite" verses; however, they are pretty important verse to remember. Some of my favorite verses include:
Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.
Psalm 39:4-5

Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it.
Hebrews 13:2

If you are a big eater, put a knife to your throat.
Proverbs 23:2

As a face is reflected in water,
so the heart reflects the real person.
Proverbs 27:19

Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless - like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 6:9

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.
Hebrews 4:12-13

Temptation comes from our own desires,
which entice us and drag us away.
James 1:14

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:17

As I'm trying to remember all the verses I use to remember and love, I'm reminded of how much I need to continue studying the bible and memorizing scriptures. So, for every post I have from this day forward I plan to include one scripture that I will work on memorizing. I'm amazed as I look through my old bible Rachel and I tabbed with numbers and highlighted scriptures back in Junior High. I hope to regain a similar sense of thirst I use to have for scripture by staying active in God's word. It may seem petty to reflect back on that youthful innocence; however, I feel the need to grow closer to God and think this may be an important way I can do it.

Much love,
Em

  2. What a great aspiration. You inspire and make me proud. I use a website that helps you memorize scripture by typing the verses (it also measures your typing speed) and then on another level, it will leave out a few words to test your memory, and then finally you type the entire verse on your own. It makes memorization fun!
